Folk graphic arts

The collection also includes examples of folk arts, paintings on canvas, sculptures, prints and others. The subgroup pictures and paintings comprises 450 paintings on canvas, glass, wood, rarely on tin, pictures on cabinets and all kinds of little pictures from pilgrimage and petty prints. Paintings on glass form a set of 135 pictures with scenes from rural life. Most of them come from Ždánice, southern Moravia. An interesting example of inventiveness of folk artists is forty so-called cabinet paintings, sometimes even playing pictures and cabinet altars which prove some influence of Baroque in the country. About one hundred of pictures represent different techniques – oil on tin, reproductions of linocut, lithography, watercolour, prints on paper, combined techniques, embroidered and segmented pictures, framed photographs.

Exceptional is the set of forty little folk altars in a bottle or under glass, most frequent motifs being Golgota and crucifixes, crucifixes with torture tools or pictures of saints. As for sculptures, they make up almost two hundred small and big woodcuts. A separate subgroup is eighty wall wooden crosses, but also table and tomb crucifixes. Very original are five field crosses from the mid-19th century with a rich carving. Another subgroup is also made of petty woodcuts and a set of toys which have been neglected lately.
