Collection fund
The collection fund of the archaeological department of Slovácké Museum is made up of three major groups. The first is so-called „old fund“ comprising both finds from researches and collections made in context with searching for the centre of Great Moravia in Staré Město and close neighbourhood as early as the 1880s, and finds discovered by the Velehrad Group and those from later researches from the years 1937–1965. This is a case of mainly ancient and mediaeval ceramics (unbroken vessels and their fragments), in lesser extent of stone tools, iron and bronze objects, exceptionally also silver jewels, totalling about 40,000 objects.
The second group is so-called „Staré Město Fund“. This is a case of objects from Slavonic (Great Moravian) period mostly coming from Antonín Zelnitius´ researches in Staré Město in the years 1923–1949. Largely, they are ceramics, iron objects (weapons and instruments), decorations made of bronze and unique Great Moravian gold and silver jewels. Altogether, the fund totals cca 1,000 pieces.
The last, most plentiful group is so-called „new fund“, i.e. material from researches since 1964. The collection amounts to about 249,000 objects. Its rise is connected with the boom in archaeological research after 1964. Geographically, the research is limited to the area of the former Uherské Hradiště district, particularly along the rivers of Morava (Pomoraví) and Olšava (Poolšaví).
Currently, the archaeological collection totals over 290,000 objects. The most valuable include the above mentioned gold and silver Great Moravian jewels – earrings, rings, buttons, belt metal tips, but also unique objects, decorations and weapons from the Early Neolithic Age, Bronze Age, Early and Late Middle Ages.
