Fort of St. Kliment
The fort is situated ca 17 km to the west of Staré Město and was built on a woody hill of the south-west part of the Chřiby hills near an old trade pathway connecting central Moravia vale with the Brno region and emblazoned with lots of legends the best known being one referring to the Constantin-Method tradition.
The first methodical research whose aim was to discover a monastery from Constantin-Method times was conducted by Robert Čechmánek in 1903-1905. He was lucky to find right in the church nave 8 skeleton graves. Another find coming from the fort which is worth mentioning is a gold Byzantine coin, so-called solid that dates back to the first half of 9th century.
In 1958, V. Hrubý and his team commenced an in-depth archaeological survey there. It proved that the first phase of building the fortress was started in the mid-9th century and the settling became most intense in Great Moravia period. With the Empire collapsed, the settled area got diminished and in the first half of 12the century at the latest the fort probably went dilapidated but over the 14th and 15th and maybe until the early 16th centuries it was re-settled.
The preserved remains of the church and its style marks indicated to several construction stages. Therefore, another survey was carried out by Vladimír Ondruš of Moravian Regional Museum in Brno in 1961-1962. He proved that the six supports pillars from the outside of the building which gave the impression of a Gothic church were added later and were not interfaced with the masonry of the church.
So far the last survey of the Fort of St. Kliment was made by Luděk Galuška of Brno Moravian Regional Museum in 1989. On the area of the fort he managed to uncover an object with a destruction of a heating device and, among others, nearby he discovered dross. The author of the survey described the object as a part of recessed workshop for processing metal. The results of his archeological survey certify that the fort was built around the mid-9th century.
